The term 'bark' later came to mean a type of sailing vessel with three or more masts, the fore– and mainmasts rigged square and the mizzen (the aftermost mast) fore–and–aft. Captain Cook's Endeavour was registered as HM Bark Endeavour, to distinguish her from HMS Endeavour, a sloop already in service at the time.
